Learning objectives

• Find out what stem cells are, understand the difference between unipotent, multipotent, pluripotent and totipotent stem cells, and learn about stem cell transplants (also known as a bone marrow transplant).
• Find out about Fanconi anaemia, including symptoms, treatment and potential options for donors
• Consider the ethical considerations surrounding ‘designer babies’ and ‘saviour siblings’.

Other opportunities for students to learn about pathology

• RCPath Open Day - Tuesday 21 June 2022, from 9am-3pm. Open to GCSE/sixth form students with a strong interest in studying medicine or biomedical science at university. We will be highlighting the various pathology specialties and providing a glimpse into careers within pathology. The day will consist of a series of hands-on activities and students will have the opportunity to speak with pathologists from various specialties. There is a limited capacity for the event, so places will be offered on a first come first served basis. Please email: thadcha.retneswaran@rcpath.org to express interest in this event with:
  • an estimate of the number of students
  • which year groups the students are in
  • how many teachers will be able to attend with the students
